Capacitor Bank Calculation

Capacitor Bank Calculation

A Capacitor Bank is  a group of several capacitors of the same rating that are connected in  series or parallel with each other to store electrical energy . The  resulting bank is then used to counteract or correct a power factor lag or phase shift in an alternative current (AC) power supply.

The selection of the capacitor bank can be explained with an example as follows

Things to Remember

Tan θ = Sin θ / Cos θ
Sin θ =  ( 1- Cos² θ)
Required Capacitor Bank, KVAR= Total Connected Load X ( Tan θ1 - Tan θ2)

Example

Consider the Existing Load = 1500 KW
Existing power Factor pf1, Cos θ= 0.75
Power Factor to be Obtained pf2, Cos θ2= 0.95

Tan θ1 = ( 1- Cos² θ1)
                   Cos θ1

            =(1-0.75²)
                   0.75

            = 0.882

Tan θ2 = ( 1- Cos² θ2)
                   Cos θ2

            =(1-0.95²)
                  0.95

            = 0.3286

Required Capacitor Bank = 1500 ( 0.882-0.3286 )
                                         =  830.1kVAR
